last day of our homeschool group

last week, we had our last homeschool group meeting for the year. we will start up again in the fall.

we tested out our science experiments...the kids had to build an egg protector.
we dropped the egg from the ladder and two out of the three eggs did not break.

this is my little guy's teacher, just about to drop their egg.
their egg didn't break either!

Monet

over the last 6 weeks we have been studying great artists during the impressionist period.  there is no one better to study than Monet.  we discussed how artists during this time period painted and the kids went to town creating their own impressionist painting!

slow day

our slow day, is a day where we slow down and stay home.  things still happen but we aren't running around, just enjoying our time at home.

reading
writing
eating
creating
reading
watching
have you read Oliver Twist?   i had never read it...pretty sad, since it's a classic!  it's a great book and my kids loved it!  we loved talking about the differences between the book and movie. we all agreed the book was better!

field trip

last week we went to the railroad museum.  we just finished learning about different inventions and one of them being the steam engine, so a trip to the railroad museum was a perfect fit!  i love when you can teach something to kids and then actually go see it, i love hands-on learning!
back in the day, they used to deliver mail by train.
i love that my man is just as much the teacher to our children as i am!
this picture caught my eye at the museum, i just love the colors!  i wanted to bring it home with me!

our homeschool room

this room has evolved a lot over the last year. it began as a craft room/play room at the beginning, but now is where we do a lot of our homeschooling too.  the room is filled with lots of books that i had from my teaching days, plenty of art supplies and some vintage classroom furniture.
i have a thing for old school furniture and items.  the table and chairs were my first purchase off of craigslist.  we needed this.  everything in the room existed before we began homeschooling, but i needed a place were we could all sit and work on things.  i was tired of sitting on the floor!
the vintage map was a birthday gift from my friend, Mandy, which is one of my most favorite gifts ever!  it's my favorite item in the room!  the bins below the map is where all of our art supplies are tucked away.
we have lots of puzzles and games we play with!
the vintage desk is a find i found at the flea market, my friends were selling it.  i think it called my name when i saw it..."melissa, you need to buy me!" i did.

i love my large bulletin board! i almost need a bigger one!  the whiteboard is filled with the new grammar we are learning each week, which is apart of our classical conversations program.

December 10

we spent the day at the Science Museum, exploring!   we went on free day, which can sometimes be overwhelming with all the people, but it wasn't bad at all.

we got to build rockets, which was perfect since we just got finished learning about them with our homeschooling group.
the kids always love getting their faces painted!

rocket man

our homeschooling group had a special guest come and share about rockets.  we have been studying this semester all about space, planets, moons, rockets, etc.  rocket man…he does have a real name, but rocket man sounds better, came and spoke about how to launch a rocket.
he used balloons to demonstrate how a rocket needs some kind of power for it to be able to launch.
at the end, we were able to watch him launch a rocket. the kids loved it!
i love how much fun homeschooling has been this year!
